Samsung Galaxy K Zoom

Samsung’s camera/phone mash-ups have always worn their compromises on their sleeve, but this one could be worth a look on Samsung Galaxy K Zoom

• It beats your camera phone but you knew that already. The K’s 20.7MP CMOS sensor, 10x zoom and F3.1 -6.3 lens make lovely photos, and pinching-to- zoom with a mechanical lens is very satisfying. Its 8GB internal storage is a bit mean, but stick a microSD card in there and you’re golden.

• It knows what you’re shooting and knows what to do about it, suggesting Scene Modes so you don’t have to trawl through its 25+ options. What’s more, you can use manual mode to get the photo you want, then save that setting as a preset, then share your settings on the Samsung store.

• It keeps you in the frame with the SelfieAlarm feature, which lets you choose where you want your face to be in the photo. It’ll beep when lined up, and fire off a burst of shots. At least Samsung knows that a ‘selfie’ is a shot taken of yourself holding your camera at arm’s length. Not just any shot, taken by anyone nearby, that you happen to be in. That’s a ‘photo’.

• It’s also a phone but just an average one. The dramatic-sounding hexa-core processor is actually a quad-core 1.3GHz chip with a dual—core 1.7GHz chip on top. It’ll truck along just fine, and the 4.8in screen puts a brave face on being just 720p in a world of Full HDers. Its design is less camera-y than the first Galaxy Zoom, with a dimpled cover a bit like the S5’s, but it’s still quite thick (12.2mm) and weighty at 200g.

• It might be worth a look despite everything above. It’s a Rs 30,000 device that completely replaces your compact camera and makes a decent Android .
